"Remember the rats, Near."

Mello is an orphan. Well, so is every other Mello. But this Mello doesn't live at Wammy's House - instead, he lives at a grungy old orphanage owned by the evil old man Roger. Roger never feeds them, helps them, or is even remotely sympathetic of their terrible lives. So, now you understand what I mean by 'orphan'.

Mello is seven years old. He used to live on the streets until he was picked up (imprisoned!) by the orphanage at age five. He then became an 'older brother' figure to Near (

toyless) and Matt, two other orphans that he lived with. He thinks he has to take care of them because Roger does not.

To pass the time in the dreary orphanage, Mello makes up stories. He's a great liar, and can string together random thoughts like a pro. His stories are erratic and don't make any sense, frequently changing halfway through ("I mean, it was a ---!"), but Near and Matt always believe him, so he's never made them any less 'exciting'. His favorite stories to tell are ones about his life before the orphanage - a life he completely made up, of course.

Mello is dressed in a black shirt with long sleeves, the edge tattered and torn. He has over-sized, baggy jeans, held up by a single suspender, which he wears from one hip to the opposite shoulder. He never wears shoes, and his feet and hands are always dirty. He sometimes has a torn white (more like yellowish tan) scarf with thin red stripes, but only in winter.
